IGP Showcases Nigeria Police Force’s Environmental Leadership at COP28, Advocates Collective Action for Sustainable Future

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, took center stage at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, shedding light on the impactful strides planned by the Nigeria Police Force in championing environmental sustainability through the Nigeria Police Green Initiatives (NPGI). With the resounding motto “Saving People with Environment,” the Police Force underscores its dedication to confronting environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices.

NPGI’s primary mission harmonizes with global endeavors to combat climate change and foster a more eco-friendly society. The IGP underscored the pivotal role law enforcement must play in ensuring a secure and sustainable future, calling for collective support to tackle climate challenges.

In acknowledgment of the worldwide shift towards sustainable energy, the IGP emphasized the Police Force’s active role in spearheading energy transition initiatives aimed at minimizing the environmental impact. As part of a strategic developmental agenda, the IGP unveiled initiatives like widespread tree planting across Police commands and formations, adopting gas for Police patrol vans, an ongoing advocacy for renewable energy initiatives in Nigeria, and a methodical approach to illuminate communities and police stations. This initiative seeks to create well-lit and secure environments, contributing to a decrease in crime rates and fostering community development.

Distinguished figures present at the event included the Executive Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago; the Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Adefoluke Adefolure, and the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Suleiman Halilu.

Seizing the moment, the Inspector General of Police called for sustained support and collaboration from stakeholders, governments, and communities to collectively address environmental challenges and propel sustainable initiatives forward in Nigeria.
